Project Big Red – Columbus, NE

By: Matt Krause – Project Manager

Construction is well underway for Project Big Red, a new 50,000-square-foot “last-mile” Amazon distribution facility in Columbus, Nebraska. The project, managed by Ryan Companies’ Des Moines office, has partnered with industry professionals Frattalone Companies to deliver top-tier earthwork and site utilities. Once completed, the facility is expected to provide approximately 50 local jobs and enhance Amazon’s regional delivery network.

The “last-mile” delivery process is a crucial part of ensuring timely and safe arrival of packages. Amazon’s strategic planning and diverse delivery methods aim to optimize efficiency, making the final leg of delivery as smooth as possible for customers.

On-site, Mike Thill and his earthwork crew are working diligently to import 80,000 tons of sand to bring the site up to grade. In addition to this, they are excavating and backfilling the new foundations for the facility. Thill and his team are on track to complete the final phase of earthwork, which includes importing an additional 10,000 tons of rock base before paving begins in April.

Meanwhile, Randy Dropik and his utility crew from Frattalone Companies are making significant progress in installing 1,500 feet of water main, 230 feet of sanitary piping, and stormwater infrastructure across the sprawling new parking lot. In a key collaboration with the City of Columbus, the team is also extending the city street south to provide access to the new Amazon facility.

With construction progressing on schedule, Project Big Red is set to not only bolster Amazon’s logistical operations but also bring new job opportunities and economic growth to the Columbus area.
