Midway YMCA – St. Paul, MN

Frattalone has been working with JE Dunn on the Midway YMCA project, completing demolition, earthwork, and utilities as one coordinated site package.

The project began with full demolition of the existing building, which had to be completed before any earthwork or environmental remediation could begin. Removing the structure and clearing the site set the foundation for the work that followed and allowed crews to safely begin preparing the property for redevelopment.

Following demolition, the team transitioned into exporting contaminated soils and importing buffer soils to properly prepare the site. This phase required careful coordination and significant material handling to ensure soils were removed, tracked, and replaced in accordance with environmental regulations and project specifications. Superintendent, Matt Johnson, managed the demolition and earthwork operations, overseeing material import and export, grading activities, and overall site logistics as the work progressed.

During the course of the project, Dan Sebesta retired after many years with Frattalone, and Andy Collova stepped in as General Superintendent and continued overseeing the project as it moved through its remaining phases.

Utility work was led by Superintendent, Charlie Jewett, who oversaw installation of a new storm system onsite. This portion of the project required close coordination with JE Dunn, the City of St. Paul, and local agencies to ensure the work was completed safely and efficiently. Sequencing the utility installation was especially important to maintain access and minimize disruption to the YMCA located across the street, which remained active throughout construction.

As the project moves toward completion, the majority of demolition, environmental work, grading, and utilities have been successfully completed. A small amount of remaining work is expected to be finalized in the spring as site conditions allow. Overall, the project has been a strong example of coordination between Frattalone, JE Dunn, and the various agencies involved, helping move the Midway site one step closer to its next phase of development.
